A NEW name, but not a new designer as such, cropped up on the Milan Fashion Week schedule this afternoon: Giamba – the younger sister line of Giambattista Valli’s eponymous label, which we’re used to seeing in Paris, not to mention the couture as well as ready-to-wear schedule. For him, as he said back in May, when news of the Giamba launch was unveiled, this was to be “another side of the same coin”. This translated as those same pretty silhouettes and dresses we so associate him with, but this time made for a younger, cuter Giamba girl in mind – gown lengths replaced by short (the key word here) full shapes, spotty sheer tights worn beneath, baby doll styles in there too. It was more accessible, more relaxed, fun in a palette of black, white and yellow, and will now put Valli in the minds of a whole new customer. Which was the point.
