MOTHER OF PEARL AUTUMN/WINTER 2015-16 READY-TO-WEAR LONDON FASHION WEEK
AMY POWNEY has been the creative director of Maia Norman’s Mother of Pearl label since 2011, a role which has seen her collaborate with artists each season to mark the brand out with its own creative USP. Today, that was all over and a new era was born – this was the first collection Powney had created sans artists. This was all just her.
“It’s nice to have creative freedom,” she relayed backstage after the show, dressed in one of own artsy twee numbers. “It’s always a bit granny and twee,” she laughed of the label’s point of view. And so she pointed out the chintzy prints in an otherwise Nineties-soaked collection that referenced the styles of Chloe Sevigny, Winona Ryder and Claire Danes – her teenage heroines. So there was a mix of sportswear casual and sweetness for track trousers, cute blouses and dinky nighty dresses – all great easy-to-wear pieces. Styling was cool and quirky with slingback loafers and socks.
