Rebecca Minkoff – Pre Spring/Summer 2016 Ready-To-Wear

If music has the power to move, it surely also has the power to move many to expand their wardrobes. Who among us hasn’t looked longingly at a photo of some chanteuse and set out on a quest for a little piece of that ineffable something? It was Françoise Hardy’s 1966 Formidable mag cover outfit that informed Rebecca Minkoff’s Resort collection and its mash-up of modish tidiness and bohemia’s unfettered romance. The ultimate “sexy tomboy,” as Minkoff dubbed her, Hardy lent her charms to unfussy pieces like a crocheted shift, op art knits, and a standout fringed T-shirt dress in baby blue suede. All of those will have buy-now-wear-now appeal for Minkoff’s young, polished customer. Most savvily, though, the designer let her chief influence remain just that, and eschewed the more costumey ’60s iterations we’ve seen from some brands over the past couple of seasons. Pieces like laser-cut tops and color-blocked metallic minis felt firmly on this side of the 21st century. They’ll no doubt find fans when Minkoff opens her biggest store to date in L.A. this August.
