Sachin and Babi Ahluwalia’s signature is embellishments, and for Pre-Fall the designers managed to bring a real difference to their typical sequins and embroideries. The starting point was an ink-drop print done in white, true blue, and coral, which was reimagined as 3-D vinyl motifs on a collarless black coat. Brushable sequin pants in the same colorway looked like the most glamorous camouflage on the planet. But that was just the beginning. Grids were also a big part of the conversation, either etched over a surrealist cloud print or layered under a netted skirt. The Ahluwalias decided that the season’s animal was a flying fish, which Babi described as “whimsical.” There was an almost wacky vibe to it all, but wacky in a spirited, welcome way. Sequins, after all, can be boring.
