God bless the bourgeois rebel. With her as their muse, the team behind Sonia by Sonia Rykiel has turned out ever-cooler, ever-more-sophisticated offerings over the past few seasons. While the Rykiel brand has long been emblematic of a certain Parisian insouciance, there were cheekier offerings to be found here, too. Take, for example, the emphatically fake crocodile shoes and belts, a trompe l’oeil print of dozens of twinkling paste diamonds, and the hot pink leopard numbers. We detected more than a hint of subversiveness in pieces like a pleated georgette and leather skirt, or a sheer army green georgette de soie shirt with big gabardine pockets. Patched-together black-and-white leather pants and jackets were particularly great-looking; ditto the military story. The Sonia by Sonia Rykiel girl is bold enough to don a matching army top and trousers (pedestrian notions of “too much look” be damned), but for the more circumspect, they’ll be every bit as cool worn separately.
