Opening the sixth day of the city’s biannual fashion showcase, the collection served as a breath of fresh air in a week of shows that have so far, been dominated by a male interpretation of female beauty.
With the practical needs of the urban modern woman at the forefront of her mind, McCartney’s latest offering placed clothes designed to empower through comfort at the top of her agenda.
The result was a soulful fashion collection that is set to delight fans of the McCartney label when it hit stores next year.
Toying with a loose and liberating silhouette, McCartney presented ribbed knit dresses crafted from organic yarn on an army of models that included Brits Cara Delevingne, Edie Campbell and Sam Rollinson. Knotted and twisted to expose panels of skin, the dresses were complimented by oversized statement necklaces crafted from PVC.

Outerwear, and in particular parachute anoraks also dominated today. Worn layered over boiler suits in corresponding silk satin voile, the jackets were effortlessly elegant but also achingly cool. When it came to evening wear McCartney continued to avoid complicated design offering up fluid, patch-work print gowns in light organza as well as circular motif that found a home on slouch jumpsuits.
A series of knotted flat sandals crafted from the designer’s signature vegan leather enhanced the idea that these were clothes for a woman with a disaffection for restrictive fashion.
For McCartney who’s multi million pound business is backed by French conglomerate Kering, this desire to empower women through fashion has long served as both a source of inspiration. Her dedication to practical femininity is also her greatest trump card as a designer. While so many in Paris neglect to consider the idea that a woman must feel at ease in her clothes in order to feel empowered in them, it is this approach to design that defines the McCartney brand.
Confirming that McCartney’s designs delight strong women with heart and soul was feminist icon and loyal Stella McCartney customer Neneh Cherry who watched from the front-row.
